Upwork Fee Calculator
variable fee 0 to 15% · connects at $0.15 · figures updated 2026-08-04
Upwork's freelancer fee has been a variable rate set per contract since May 2025, not the old tiered 20/10/5%. That means the number you need is on the offer in front of you, and the arithmetic is worth doing before you accept it rather than on payout day. Set the contract value and the rate you were shown, add the connects the proposal cost, and both directions of the calculation are below: what a contract leaves you, and what you have to quote to keep a target amount.
What a contract actually pays
you keep
What to quote to hit a target
At a 15% fee, a $50 target is a $58.82 quote, not $50.
Works the same on an hourly rate: put your target hourly in and quote the result.
How the rate is set
Until May 1, 2025 the fee was tiered per client: 20% on the first $500 billed to that client, 10% up to $10,000, then 5% above it. Since then it has been a variable rate between 0% and 15%, set per contract by Upwork's own algorithm, and disclosed at the proposal or offer stage. Upwork does not publish the formula, and freelancers consistently report most contracts landing near 10%, with saturated categories drifting toward the ceiling.
One case the calculator cannot cover for you: contracts signed before May 1, 2025 keep running on the old tiered structure until they close. If a client relationship predates that date, read the fee off the contract itself rather than assuming the new band applies.
What this does not include
Withdrawal fees are deliberately absent. They vary by payment method and country, our sources disagreed on the amounts, and Upwork's own documentation could not be verified directly while this page was built, so publishing a number here would have been a guess dressed as a figure. Check your own withdrawal method in Upwork's settings and subtract that separately.
Also outside the calculation: income tax, currency conversion on your side, and the connects spent on proposals that never became contracts. That last one is usually the largest hidden cost of the three, and it is the reason the connects field exists at all. A 10% fee on a won contract can be cheaper than the connects burned on twenty proposals that went nowhere.
