Are Upwork Connects Worth It in 2026? The Real Math

Whether Connects are "worth it" isn't really a pricing question, $0.15 each is small on its own. It's a cost-per-hire question, and most freelancers never actually run that number. Here's how to.

The base facts

Each Connect costs $0.15, with no bulk discount for buying more at once. Every account on the free Basic plan gets 10 Connects credited monthly, which in 2026 is rarely enough to cover even one competitive proposal on its own. Most job posts require somewhere between 6 and 16 Connects to apply, and a boosted proposal can run 40 or more on top of that. The exact cost is set per job by Upwork, driven by budget tier and category competitiveness, and it's shown on the post itself before you spend anything.

The refund rules, precisely

This is where a lot of freelancers get the math wrong. Connects are not refunded when a client declines your proposal, never responds, or hires someone else, that's the large majority of outcomes and the Connects are simply spent. You only get them back if the job post itself is pulled before any proposals were reviewed, whether the client removed it or Upwork took it down for a policy violation. For boosted proposals specifically, only the extra boost portion may come back if your proposal never held a winning boosted slot, the base Connects spent on the application itself generally aren't returned regardless.

The real math: cost per hire, not cost per bid

$0.15 feels irrelevant in isolation, which is exactly why it's the wrong number to focus on. The number that matters is what a single hire actually costs you in Connects once you account for how many proposals it takes to land one.

Picture two approaches to the same week of bidding:

  • Targeted: 15 proposals, carefully matched to your niche, averaging 10 Connects each. That's 150 Connects, $22.50, and if your match quality is solid you might land 1 to 2 contracts from it.
  • Spray: 50 generic proposals sent fast, averaging 6 Connects each. That's 300 Connects, $45, on jobs you're only loosely qualified for, and a much lower hit rate.

The spray approach spends twice the money for a worse outcome, and that's before counting the time spent writing 50 proposals instead of 15. The lesson isn't that Connects are expensive, it's that unqualified bidding is what makes them expensive. A pre-bid habit that filters out fake or mismatched posts before you spend anything, the kind covered in our ghost jobs guide, does more for your Connects ROI than any pricing tier ever will.

Do you need to buy more, or just spend the free ones better

For anyone bidding regularly, 10 free Connects a month is a subsidy, not a working budget, it barely covers two or three competitive proposals. Realistically, most active freelancers end up buying Connects, and the honest way to think about that spend is as a marketing line item with a return you can actually measure, not a sunk cost to resent every time you don't win. Upwork's Freelancer Plus subscription offers a larger monthly Connects allowance for a flat fee, the exact allowance and price have shifted across sources this year, so check the current terms on Upwork's own Plans page before assuming a number, rather than trusting whatever figure you find in an older post, including this one by the time you read it.

Boosting is a separate spend, and a separate decision

Don't fold boost spend into your base Connects math. A boost only helps a proposal that's already a strong match, it doesn't rescue a weak one, and boosting into a job you weren't likely to win anyway is just a more expensive way to lose. Our boosts guide covers when a boost is actually worth the extra Connects and when it isn't.

The bottom line

Connects are worth it exactly to the degree that your bidding is targeted. Cheap, unqualified volume is the expensive version of this system, and careful, well-matched bidding is the cheap one, even though the sticker price per Connect never changes. If you want to see the full cost of a proposal, service fee and Connects together, against what a contract actually pays out, our fee calculator runs both numbers side by side. And if bids that should convert aren't converting, the more common bottleneck is profile match, not Connects spend, our audit tool can show you where that gap is.
