Upwork Glossary

Most Upwork advice online explains the interface. This glossary explains the mechanics underneath it: what actually decides whether clients see you, which signals move your score, and which ones do nothing at all. Definitions come from the same knowledge base that powers the audit, compiled over five years and checked against Upwork's own statements.

Terms

Job Success Score (JSS)

The trust metric Upwork shows on your profile, calculated from successful versus negative contract outcomes.

Roughly (successful outcomes minus negative outcomes) divided by total outcomes. Upwork tracks three rolling windows (6, 12 and 24 months) and displays the best of the three. It updates daily. A contract starts counting toward JSS once it reaches 90 days of life, and larger contracts carry more weight: $1+ counts 1.0, $251+ counts 1.25, $1,001+ counts 1.5.

UMA (Upwork Matching Algorithm)

The engine that reads your profile as natural language to judge relevance, rather than counting keyword tags.

UMA reads your profile as natural language rather than counting keyword tags, and it weights profile sections in a strict order. Employment History titles and descriptions carry the most weight, followed by Portfolio, Overview, and Title. Testimonials and Education have no measurable effect on matching.

Best Match

The sorting Upwork applies to proposals already submitted to a job.

Best Match ranks you by profile-to-job relevance, combined with JSS and earnings history.

Connects

The token you spend to submit a proposal or to boost.

Connects are consumed when you send a proposal and when you place a boost bid. During the mid-2026 boost outage, Upwork refunded Connects spent on misfiring boosts at scale.

Profile Boost

A paid bid that lifts your whole profile in client Talent Search results.

A boost amplifies a profile that already matches the query. It cannot create relevance that is not there: if your profile does not match the search at all, no amount of Connects will surface it. Upwork suggests around 20 Connects; read impressions before clicks, because zero impressions means you are not being shown at all.

Proposal Boost

A paid bid that lifts one specific proposal in a job's applicant list.

Distinct from a profile boost. The window closes 7 days after the job is posted, as soon as the client hires someone, or if the client deletes the post. Boosting a stale post wastes Connects.

Impressions vs Profile Views

An impression is an appearance in a list; a view is an actual click on your profile.

Appearing in search results is not a view. A view is counted only when someone clicks through organically, and repeat clicks from the same client within a day count once, not several times. A rough healthy benchmark is about 600 impressions per 10 clicks.

Rising Talent

A badge some new freelancer profiles carry early in their first weeks on Upwork.

In one documented case, a profile carried the Rising Talent badge from its very first week on the platform.

Top Rated and Top Rated Plus

Trust badges tied to your JSS band.

The bands matter more than the badge itself. Below 80% JSS you are removed from search and only reachable through direct invites. 80 to 89% suppresses Best Match and strips Top Rated. 90 to 94% is the Top Rated band. 95 to 97% makes you eligible for Top Rated Plus. 98 to 100% earns algorithmic preference and Enterprise invites.

Specialized Profiles (discontinued)

Secondary profiles with their own title, overview and skills. Switched off on 28 May 2026.

Their titles, overviews and skill sets did not migrate to the General profile, so any visibility that lived there was lost. Portfolio items created under a specialized profile still feed the matching algorithm. Upwork raised the General profile limit to 20 hard plus 2 soft skills specifically so keywords could be moved across.

Green Skills

Upwork's per-search "in-demand" highlight inside Talent Search, not a fixed label on the skill itself.

Which skills show as green is contextual: it depends on your whole profile and the exact query a client types, not the skill in isolation, and no tool can reliably predict it from profile text alone. Check by searching your niche's exact keyword from a logged-in client account and seeing which skill tags glow green on profiles similar to yours.

Preselected Filters

Filters a client sets in the second step of a job post, acting as a hard gate.

If you fall outside a client's filter range you are not shown at all. This is not a soft ranking signal, so matching the typical filter expectations for your category (rate range, location, experience level) is what keeps you visible to that client.

Private Feedback and Notes

Upwork removed the old private survey during 2026 and replaced it with Notes, which do not affect JSS.

The classic rule that five public stars could hide a silent private penalty no longer applies. Only the final feedback at contract close moves your JSS. Client Notes and mid-contract feedback do not.

Job Success Insights

Per-contract markers that show whether a client was satisfied.

Since private feedback disappeared, this is the practical way to gauge whether a client was unhappy with a contract. Available on solo profiles only.

See also: Job Success Score (JSS), Private Feedback and Notes. Full guide →

Mid-contract Feedback

A temporary review a client can leave on an active contract, available every 30 days.

It does not affect JSS. Only the final feedback given when the contract closes changes the number.

Project Catalog

A separate way to list services on Upwork, ranked by its own algorithm rather than profile or proposal boosts.

The Catalog runs on its own algorithm, keyword-matched on title and description, so it behaves differently from profile and proposal boosts. Catalog boosts run on a 48-hour cycle, so recreating an item is often a cleaner way to re-trigger visibility than waiting.

Hire List (AI assistants)

The pool ChatGPT and Claude can pull Upwork freelancers from.

Since 2026 clients can discover and message freelancers directly from an AI assistant, which is an entirely new top of funnel. Look at which skills appear in your niche's hire list and steer prospective clients toward creating jobs with those skills.

Irregular Activity

The behavioural flag Upwork raises when your usage pattern looks automated.

It is triggered by speed plus volume rather than intent: many open tabs, fast pagination through Talent Search, refreshing the job feed on a fixed rhythm, identical bulk messages, or rapid scrolling through conversations. It catches ordinary users, not just bots.

Exclusive Agency Member

A freelancer whose profile can inherit a Top Rated agency's badge.

Flipping to exclusive membership inside a Top Rated agency lets a profile inherit the agency's badge — in the documented case this moved a profile from 91% to about 96% and regained Top Rated. Clients cannot see whether you are exclusive or not.

Knowing the terms is not the same as ranking for them. UpBRO checks your profile section by section against the 2026 algorithm and returns concrete fixes in about a minute.
