What the algorithm actually reads — by weight

Upwork's matcher (UMA) reads your profile as natural language and ranks sections in a strict priority order. Controlled experiments across dozens of profiles put the weights roughly like this:

1. Employment History — title AND description (highest weight, by far)
2. Portfolio — title and description
3. Overview
4. Title (jumps near the top only if your keyword is the first word)
5. Other Experience
6. Consulting topics
7. Skills
8. Certificates (title)
9. Project Catalog

Two sections have zero algorithmic impact: Testimonials and Education. Stop optimizing them for search.

The three most common failures

Audits of real profiles in 2026 show the same patterns again and again:

• Your main keyword appears only once or twice. Found in 25 of 30 audited profiles. The keyword should appear in every section — several times in your Employment History descriptions alone.
• Your title isn't a real search query. 22 of 30 profiles had titles that don't exist in Upwork's search autocomplete. If clients don't type it, you don't rank for it.
• Empty sections. Employment history, consultations, other experience, certificates — each empty section is ranking weight you're donating to competitors.

How to diagnose your own profile

Open your Stats dashboard and read the funnel in order:

1. Proposals Sent vs Viewed — if this is broken, your profile isn't matching (the fixes above).
2. Interviews vs Proposals — if views are fine but interviews aren't, your cover letter is the problem, not your profile.
3. Hires vs Interviews — that's pricing and call skill. The algorithm is no longer involved.

Fix whichever metric breaks first in the funnel. Most freelancers rewrite their overview when the real failure is an empty Employment History — the single heaviest section in the ranking.
