Two separate integrations, both official
Upwork's marketplace is now built directly into two AI assistants:
- ChatGPT, launched April 9, 2026 as an app inside ChatGPT, drawing on Upwork's full marketplace of over 18 million professionals across 130 categories and 10,000 skills.
- Claude, launched June 17, 2026 as the Upwork Claude Connector, an app inside Anthropic's Claude that a client enables once and then uses from within any conversation.
Neither is a side experiment. Both let a business describe what they need in plain language, get a job post drafted for them, and see a shortlist of matching freelancers, all without leaving the chat window.
How a client actually uses it
The Claude flow, which Upwork documents directly, looks like this: the client enables the Upwork connector once, then types something like "start an Upwork job post for a data analyst who can build a reporting system from our support transcripts." Claude drafts the job post, refines it based on feedback, and once the title and description are ready, the client can continue on Upwork to publish it. Along the way, Claude can also surface freelancers with relevant skills directly in the conversation.
The ChatGPT flow works on the same principle: describe the work, get a drafted post and a set of relevant freelancers pulled from Upwork's marketplace, then finish the hire on Upwork itself. Neither integration replaces Upwork. Both are a faster on-ramp into it.
What determines whether you show up
This is the part that matters for your profile. Upwork's own documentation for the Claude connector is specific about who gets surfaced: freelancers need strong reputation signals, meaning relevant skills, a Job Success Score of 90% or higher, and good client feedback, and their profile must be set to public. Claude then displays a curated shortlist of up to 10 freelancers in a carousel based on what the client described, not the full marketplace. Upwork states plainly that not everyone gets shown, and that this is intentional.
There's no fee to appear in either integration, and no separate opt-in beyond keeping your profile public. Standard Upwork fees still apply once a client actually hires and works with you.
What this actually means for your profile
Two thresholds are doing the filtering before any AI-specific tactic matters:
- JSS at 90% or above. Below that line, you're describing yourself out of a channel that didn't exist a year ago. If your score has slipped, our Job Success Score guide covers the recovery playbook.
- A public profile. An obvious point, but worth checking directly if you've ever toggled visibility settings.
Beyond the hard gate, the same signals that win regular Best Match matter here too: your skills list has to actually match what a client would type into a chat, and your work history needs to read as real proof, not filler. The keyword logic doesn't change just because the surface is now a chat window instead of a search bar.
The practical move
Watch what skills and phrasing keep showing up in job posts drafted through these tools in your niche, and steer your own profile's skill list and title to match that exact language rather than the jargon you'd use internally. If your JSS and public visibility are already solid, this is one more surface where a well-optimized profile is doing double duty for free. If you're not sure your profile actually clears the bar clients (or an AI reading on their behalf) are filtering on, our 2026 optimization playbook walks the whole thing section by section, or run it through the audit tool directly.
The shortlist size and JSS threshold above are listed with our other published figures on the Upwork statistics page.
